American Heart Month
Launched in September 2011 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Million Hearts™ is a national initiative that aims to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. over the next five years. This public-private partnership, co-led by CDC and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is integrating and amplifying a range of existing heart disease and stroke prevention programs, policies, and activities.

About a decade ago, Americans began enjoying the sweet, nutty taste of flaxseed. As a bonus, you get the protection from heart disease as a reward. Studies have show that flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids that appear to reduce the incidence of blood clotting. If you'd like to take advantage of this wonderful way to prevent heart disease, try adding flaxseed to:
•Yogurt and fruit
•Cottage or ricotta cheese and fruit
•Yogurt or ricotta with a sugar-free syrup
•Smoothies and shakes
•Mix it into pancake or muffin batter, or other baked goods (you'll probably need to add a little more water)
Take care of yourself this month and beyond!
