Tracing U.S. Immigration Patterns

The Pew Research Center recently published “From Germany to Mexico: How America’s Source of Immigrants has Changed Over a Century,” including maps depicting the states’ populations by decade from 1850 - 2013.

The source of its data is from the U.S. Census Bureau’s ongoing survey the American Community Survey and Decennial Census counts, also its 1999 report, "Historical Census Statistics on the Foreign-born Population of the United States: 1850-1990."

The Census has published a similar study, Ancestry: 2000, with a single map depicting largest ancestry by counties.

Researchers can use the Census Bureau's American FactFinder tool, providing key access to Census data, to create similar datasets and maps.
