How did the Navy come about?
The origins of the Navy are traced back to the American Revolution. The Continental Congress established the Continental Navy on October 13th, 1775. The Navy was created to hunt down British commerce ships that were supplying the British army with weapons and equipment. By doing this, the Navy would weaken the British army by cutting them off from the motherland. After the American Revolution, Congress sold off the Navy's ships to help pay off some of the war costs. Around 1790, trade began to increase. Congress was worried about pirates and European attacks, and declared that more ships be built. In 1789, the ratification of the Constitution gave Congress the power "to provide and maintain a navy." Congress officially established the Department of Navy on April 30th, 1798.
What are other aspects of the Navy?
The Navy Medical Department was established during the American Revolution, where doctors could practice medicine aboard the sickbays on ships. Navy Medicine continues to equip the ships with surgeons and doctors to provide care for the comrades. The Navy Medicine saves lives because they are the "most highly-trained, educated, and specialized force in history." They work to make sure that the Navy and their families are taken care of.
