17th Anniversary of 9/11


This past week marks the 17th anniversary of 9/11, or the four attacks against the United States by the terrorist group al-Qaeda on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The 9/11 Commission, or the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States was created in 2002 as an independent commission to prepare a complete account of the circumstances surrounding the events in 2001. The Commission was also mandated to provide recommendations designed to guard against future attacks. The site includes the 9/11 Commission Report, hearings, staff statements, and an archive.

The Department of Homeland Security was formed in 2003 and included the Immigration and Naturalization Service as part of a national effort to safeguard the United States against terrorism.

The 9/11 Memorial was created to commerorate those that lost their lives and the heroes that boldly put their on safety on the line. The 9/11 Museum in New York City "tells the story of 9/11 through interactive technology, archives, narratives and a collection of artifacts." The website also provides an interactive virtual tour of the museum so that individuals can explore the exhibits.

On the OSU campus, the Fire Protection Society honored the firefighters who lost their lives on this day.
