On May 17, 2017, Robert S. Mueller III was appointed by the Acting Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein to serve as Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice to complete a full and thorough investigation of the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
On April 18, 2019, The U.S. Department of Justice Special Council's Office released the redacted Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election.
The 448 page report is in two parts. There are five main sections in the report:
- The Special Counsel's Investigation
- Russian "Active Measures" Social Media Campaign
- Russian Hacking and Dumping Operations
- Russian Government Links to and Contacts with the Trump Campaign
- Prosecution and Declination Decisions
What is the Mueller Report and the Special Counsel Investigation?
According to the Department of Justice, during the 2016 Presidential campaign it was evident that Russia was interfering in government affairs. In June 2016, Russian hackers infiltrated the Democratic National Committee and began releasing their emails and private information. Then in July, WikiLeaks released additional stolen documents detailing the Clinton campaign. Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, came under attack. It was thought that Trump was working with the Russian government to discredit Hillary Clinton and ruin her presidential campaign. According to the Department of Justice, Russia launched a "social media campaign that favored Donald J. Trump and disparaged Hillary R. Clinton." It was also found that a Russian intelligence service, the Internet Research Agency, "hacked into computers to steal documents and emails from individuals associated with the Democratic Party." With the targeting of the Democratic party, Trump was placed under investigation to determine if he was colluding with the Russian government. In spite of Trump's reputation being sullied, he won the presidential election. The investigation continued when he took over the presidency.
