Protecting Pets from COVID-19

Protecting Pets from COVID-19

Currently the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have had no reports of pets or other animals contracting the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.  It is however recommended that we do everything we can to prevent that possibility.  According to usda.gov/coronavirus, “You should restrict contact with pets and other animals while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people.”  This means maintaining 6 feet of distance between yourself and other pets.  If possible ask another household member to care for your animals while you are ill.  If you must be the one to care for a pet, farm animal, or service animal, wear a face mask and wash your hands before and after each interaction to prevent cross contamination.  Home care for COVID-19 is not a reason to separate service dogs from their handlers.  Pets however may be better off staying in another part of the house with the rest of the family.  For more updated information see the CDC’s coronavirus website for Households with Pets or Animals and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
