Agency Highlights: Bureau of Labor Statistics and Unemployment Data





The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the statistical branch of the Department of Labor, reporting unemployment and employment data, also inflation and prices, pay and benefits, and productivity in the U.S. economy.

See Latest Releases under Economic Releases for the major economic indicators, employment and unemployment, inflation and prices, and employment projections. Releases are also highlighted on the first page. For May 5: Americans born in the early 1980s hold an average of 8.2 jobs from age 18 to 32.

Locate data using the Subject tab. For the National Unemployment rate under Unemployment for example, see the labor force statistics from the Current Population Survey for March 2020 including Unemployment Rate, Civilian Labor Force Participation Rate, and Annual Averages for 2019. Charts for each include 10 years of historical data. The Employment Situation for April will be released on May 8.

Key publications include the Economics Daily (presents fresh economic information in charts and maps),  Monthly Labor Review (the principal journal from the BLS), and Occupational Outlook Handbook (key resources for information on occupations - education, salary information, and outlook).
